If you are heading to Antarctica or Patagonia, it's likely you'll go through Punta Arenas at some point. It is a city nestled between Argentina, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia on the southern tip of Chile.
There are so many reasons to visit this town and it will certainly be hard to beat the friendliness and generosity of the Chilean people. Here are ten awesome things to do, and although it is far from an exhaustive list, they are...pretty darn cool. I have NOT included things outside the town (like..going to Antarctica or Patagonia!) and all of these are completely walkable.
1. HAVE A DRINK (OR TWO) AT THE DREAMS HOTEL ROOFTOP BAR
The Dreams Casino and hotel is the nicest (a.k.a. most "modern-looking" place) in town. people go here to gamble, drink, eat at the lovely cafes, and go out here at night for the view. No need to dress up so don't feel like you will be kicked out for not wearing something rreally nice (being from LA, I thought we were going to a really fancy place so I actually dressed up and found I was the only one not in jeans or slightly nicer-looking outfits. Next time I wore flats and jeans like everyone else).
2. WALK THE PLAZA MUNOZ GAMERO
Cool city center with carts, wagons, and stalls to shop from.
3. VISIT THE CEMETARIO MUNICIPAL
It's cool, it's creepy, it's bizarre, it's haunting. DEFINITELY go, especially if you have a little dark side. It's like nothing you've probably ever seen before and I walked around for a couple hours.
4. MUSEO REGIONAL DE MAGALLANES
So many cool museums and Magellan plays such a HUGE role in the history of the town. You'll find him showing up everywhere.
5. SEE THE PENGUINS
Because...they're penguins! I wanted to take them home but I guess I wasn't allowed. Boo. It's a fun day trip but expect lots of wind!
6. EAT THE BIGGEST SANDWICH OF YOUR LIFE (AND AMAZING DESSERTS) AT THE CAFE IMMIGRANTE
Such a cool place! Sandwiches are literally as big as plates, desserts are legendary, and the vibe is cool. Very hospitable owners who are Croatian immigrants.
7. NAO VICTORIA MUSEO
Replica ships make this a fun little museum where you can live the nautical history!
8. WALK AROUND TOWN AND CHECK OUT ALL THE HUGE MONUMENTS OF FAMOUS FIGURES (SPRAWLED ALL OVER TOWN)
They line the streets all over town! It's fun to check out what historic figure got which monument. There are a huge variety in size and scale but they're everywhere!
9. THE BRAUN-MENENDEZ CULTURAL CENTER
The cultural center is a really cool place to start walking around the city. If you look closely, you will notice gold plaques on historic buildings describing their history. The architecture is really cool and there is SO much neat history here that it's a treasure hunt of plaques around town.
10. WALK UP THE MIRADOR CERRO DE LA CRUZ
This is a super cool walk up a hill to see a great view of the entire straight and city. There are numerous padlocks of love along the fence, as many lovers and couples come here to...enjoy the view!
There are 10 things to get you started! You'll see many ore things walking around to these along the way, but absolutely walk. People are very friendly, street shopping is fun, and there's alot of little hidden oddities to see around town.
